I read Fever 1793 the summer before seventh grade in 2020 during quarantine, when my friends and I started a book club with the help of our parents. This book is interesting because it is a historical fiction book based on the Yellow Fever Epidemic. The book is about a girl named Mattie Cook who is living in Philadelphia with her mom and grandfather in 1793. Her family has a coffee shop that her mom makes her work at and she continues to work there and do other chores until the fever breaks out. She eventually leaves the city with her grandfather due to her mothers wishes, but she comes back home to help take care of her sick mother after a long journey. She experienced many hardships and more sickness while trying to escape the sickness that was happening back home.
I really enjoyed this book because I could "relate" to Mattie because of Covid. Though Yellow Fever was an epidemic and not a pandemic which meant that Yellow Fever was in a concentrated area. Some parts of the book where hard to read due to the time period it was set in and the language Anderson used to make it historically accurate. There was also a lot of deaths that Mattie had to deal with which were hard to read sometimes because of all the detail. However, this made the book more intriguing to read because there was always a plot twist and I was never sure of what was going to happen.
The rating I would give this book is a 7.5/10. The book tells a good story and you feel like your walking with Mattie as she experiences and overcomes hardships like the death of a close friend and family members and being surrounded by sickness. I would recommend this book to people who like reading historical fiction. At the beginning of every chapter there is a quote from that time period that was from a doctor at that time or other people's journals who were living in Philadelphia. These quotes helped you better understand what people were feeling because they were real quotes from real people and it made the book more intriguing.
Hi Chizara,
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds interesting. I do not know much about yellow fever, but I can see how there might be similarities between the yellow fever epidemic and the Covid-19 pandemic. It is cool that you started a book club at the beginning of the pandemic. That sounds like a fun thing to do even if you can't engage in normal activities.

Great review, Chizara! I like how you related Mattie's experiences with yellow fever in the book with yours with covid, and how that made it more interesting for you. Historical fiction can be very interesting, and if done right you can learn a lot, so after reading your review I'll put it on my reading list!
ReplyDeleteNice work on this Review, Chizara! I love the way you described the setting and plot with the time period included. I have heard of the this book before but have never given it a chance, I think with this review I have to change my mind.
