The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

I read The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas last year during English class for our banned book project. This book has been challenged many times for its themes of police brutality due to the plot being about a girl who witnessed her friend get killed by the police and she tries to get justice for him. She also deals with friendships and relationships throughout the course of the book. She also has a friendship end with one of her best friends because she is racist.

I really liked this book because of the plot. It is very engaging because of the themes of justice and the plot twists that I didn't see coming. Parts of this book were uncomfortable to read but they were all important sections of this book, like when Starr's friend Khalil is killed by the police officer that stops them. There is also a strong sense of community throughout this book in the place where Starr and her family lives, Garden Heights. Her dad owns a grocery store where her friends sometimes visited her and there is a man who owns a barbeque shop who gives the kids there free food if they show him their report cards.

My favorite part of the book is when Starr finally cuts ties with her ex bestfriend Hailey because of the many racist comments she has made. I liked this part so much because she no longer let her "friend" hold her back and affect her. This book is very powerful because of the message that you should fight for what you believe in and you shouldn't let anyone hold you back from doing that.

I would probably recommend this book to everyone. This book is very powerful and has a great storyline that is easy for anyone to get into and enjoy if they read it with an open mind. The book has themes that are not talked about a lot but should be talked about way more and this book helps bring light to those topics. Starr's journey is very exciting especially when she is in dangerous situations that leave you on the edge of your seat while wondering if she will make it out okay. I would rate this book a 9/10 because of the captivating story line and strong themes of justice.

  2. I like how you say, this part of the book is uncomfable but they need to be most people would etheir skip over that or change the wording to be more light and fluffy. I like the end where you talk about your favorite part of the book and who you would recommend this to. One hard thing about writing these book blogs is talking about the books with out spoiling them. I think you could talk a little more about the beginning, to be frank though I haven't read it myself so if there is some plot twit early on that would be hard to dance around. Good review though.
