If you haven't read The Summer I Turned Pretty series, I warn you that there might be some spoilers coming up about the second book, It's Not Summer Without You. In this blog post, I will review the book and then predict how the second season of the TSITP show will adapt the second book to follow the previous season's ending, which was pretty different from the books.
It's Not Summer Without You starts off very upsetting, giving us the visualization that Belly Conklin is back at the summer house with her favorite people, Susannah is alive and healthy, and she is in a loving relationship with Conrad. We are ripped from this fantasy right as we read the second paragraph, as Belly says that Susannah is dead, she isn't at the summer house, and she and Conrad are broken up. When I read this for the first time, I was pretty disappointed and also shocked, not expecting the book to take the turn that it did. The show might miss this factor of surprise though, as the last episode of the first season ended with Susannah agreeing to do the cancer trials Jeremiah begs her to do. I'm excited to see if they will keep her alive in the show, or follow the sorrowful start of the second book. In this novel, we follow Belly and Jeremiah, as they try to find Conrad as he's gone "missing" from college. In order to make sure he is back in time for his midterms, they find him at the summer house, trying to save it from being sold by Conrad and Jeremiah's Dad, Adam Fisher. The book ends with them eventually saving the house with the help of Laurel, and while this is good news, a turn of events at the end of the book disconnects Belly and Conrad once again.
In the next season of The Summer I Turned Pretty TV show, I hope that they will keep Belly and Conrad's current relationship, and maybe show the reaction of Jeremiah to this as him and Belly are technically dating, as she asked him to go to the deb ball, but Conrad took his place instead when Jeremiah missed the waltz finding out Susannah has cancer again. This will probably start some drama early in the show, but I expect them to start another plot line most likely with the new characters they introduced, Kyra Sedgewick and Elsie Fisher. They wrapped up filming season 2 in early November, so hopefully we can expect the second season to release sometime this summer.
If you have watched the show and read the books, what do you think they will implement? What do you think they will remove? Let me know your thoughts!

Hi Cali! I love that you have read this book in order to connect it with the show. The twist of Susannah dying is heartbreaking and it does make you wonder if they will stray away from this storyline in the show or follow it through. I have to check out this show. Great job!
ReplyDeleteGreat article, Cali! I like how you included your predictions for what will happen in the next season. I haven't read the books or the movie, but this review made them seem pretty interesting so I definitely will check them out eventually!
