I Crawl Through It by A.S King

I Crawl Through It by A.S King is a book about Stanzi and her friends who are damaged high school seniors. Their school gets bomb threats daily and the students are always doing safety drills. Stanzi's friend Gustav is building an invisible helicopter in his backyard that Stanzi can only "see" on certain days. Her parents always take vacations to school shooting sites like Columbine and Sandy Hook and Her other friends, Landsdale is a compulsive liar and there is also a naked man that lives in a bush that all four characters interact with. The book is narrated by Stanzi, Gustav, Lansdale, and China, Stanzi's best friend.

This book was hard to read sometimes because the plot was hard to track due to the way the book was narrated by the four main characters. I was often confused while reading and wasn't always sure what was going on. However, the book was still very engaging and I enjoyed reading it. The themes were all real life issues like school shootings and bomb threats. Gustav's invisible helicopter that he wanted to escape with shows how their trauma from their grim school life effected the characters mentally. China also "swallows" herself as a way to escape from all the chaos happening around her. I think it's important to read books that have uncomfortable topics because you can't ignore them in real life.

If I were to rate this book, I would give it a rating of 7.5/10. The book was difficult to read due to the narration style but it didn't take away from the book. This was a fun book to read and I enjoyed the characters descriptions of the chaos happening around them and how they tried to "escape" from reality. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes reading about real life issues and enjoys books with complicated plots.

  1. Hi Chizara! Your review makes the book sounds very interesting. I wonder why there is a naked man in the bush. I do have a question: is there a particular reason Stanzi's parents go on vacations to places with school shootings?

  2. Good review Chizara! I agree, real life situations happen and we can't ignore them. There are multiple bomb threats that are happening everyday and even though they are uncomfortable, it is the brutal reality. This book sounds really interesting!

  3. Hi Chizara!
This reminded me a bit of the bomb threats that had been going on at UHS, it's horrible that it is a reality for some people. The book sounds very interesting, but I also agree that it can get confusing with more than one main character...
