What would you do if you picked up your entire life and moved to a new town in an attempt to start a new life, only to find out that your estranged sister, who was contactless for years, stole your car and cash, leaving you with nothing but her 11-year-old daughter? This is the story of Naomi Witt, a woman in her twenties and a runaway bride who left her fiance at the alter after realizing she did not want to be who her fiance wanted her to be. When her twin Tina urgently reaches out asking for help after not speaking for years, Naomi has no choice but to help her sister. She travels to the town of Knockemout where her sister is living, only to find out that not only has Tina created a reputation of a thief and liar for herself, but Naomi discovers that her sister's call for help was, in reality, a way for Tina to steal her car and money. Just when Naomi believes it can’t get any worse, she finds out that Tina has abandoned her 11-year-old daughter, forcing Naomi into possession. With no money, car, or plan, Naomi must stay in town and figure out how to proceed with her new life.
This book is one of the best I’ve ever read. It began with a bang, right as Naomi was in the process of escaping from her wedding and angry fiance, which drew me in and forced me to find out why. In my opinion, a hook can make or break a book, and this particular novel has a great one. Additionally, unlike some books that dump all of the plot twists into one place of the book and then use the rest of the book to have the characters adjust to the twists, there were many sudden plot changes evenly spaced out. For example, I initially thought that the only twist was that Naomi found that she had to take care of her niece. However, many things happened later on in the story that I did not expect to happen. One of my favorite things about the author’s writing was that she gave a lot of background and small details. It wasn’t so much to the point where I was confused about what the plotline was, but I noticed a lot of scene descriptions as well as small, unimportant dialogue between characters. This helped me to obtain a better visual of what was happening during scenes as well as see the personality of the characters.
I have very few complaints about the book and its writing and plot. I would definitely recommend this to those who are looking for an exciting read that is packed with plot twists and secrets.

FIRST, I mean, great review! You explained the book well.
ReplyDeleteThis review had me hooked on the book at the beginning as well. I expected Tina's problem to make up the whole plot of the book, but apparently, it was the other way around for Naomi. This review did a great job building the climax of the book while giving enough detail to not spoil it at all.
ReplyDeleteHi Lena, this sounds like a very interesting book. Unimportant dialogue is an interesting way to describe dialogue that reveals personality traits.
